Myth Busters

Over the years it has become apparent that many anglers have slated products similar to our Mistral brand in the press. I bet some of the following rings a bell with many of you.

  • Maybe you have heard that freezer baits have better ingredients than those you don't need to freeze?
  • Maybe you have heard that 'shelf life' baits are just a ball of semolina with a dose of flavouring and a handful of preservatives?
  • Maybe you have heard that it is not possible to make 'shelf life' baits with good ingredients?
  • Maybe you believe these things or maybe you are, like me, cynical of wild claims made by marketeers?

Lets have a look at a few facts ....

  • Did you know that all Mistral frozen baits are made with the same ingredients in the same quantities as those found in a shelf-life bait?
  • Did you know that we at Mistral have never used semolina in our baits and have no plans to do so?
  • Did you know that we do not use dangerous chemical preservative products in our baits?
  • Did you know that anybody who tells you that good ingredients can't be machine rolled is telling you porkies or they have not as much experience as they like you to think they have?
  • Our consultants are not paid to tell you stories - they tell the truth for free.

What's in a Mistral boilie?

No secrets here - we keep just about every type of bait ingredient that it's possible to get, from really expensive things like liver powder, Robin Red and caseins through to the mid priced items like Nectablend, Krill, and Hydrolysed fish proteins to the essential basics such as LT 94 fishmeal, micronized maize and soyas. We use flavours and enhancers such as green lipped mussel, belachan, corn steep, amino acids, and the list goes on.
Let us take a look at the ingredients we buy to make our baits.

Another advantage we have is that we buy ingredients by the tonne or in many cases by 3 or 4 tonnes. This brings us very considerable savings on costs - we buy many ingredients at less than half the price than 'Fred in the Shed' can.
Hand rolled against machine rolled baits has been on people's lips for many years - which is the better you may ask?

In simple terms a machine will make exactly what the operator asks of it rather like a man behind his rolling table in a garden shed. However machines don't have hangovers and are able to offer you consistency all year round.
Let us look at one of our boilies and what's in it?

'Pepper Sarni No Name'
In this bait we find around 25% of its content being Krill meal, LT94 fishmeal, Shrimp meal, belachan and spices. Next comes some more good stuff like Robin Red, Hydrolysed fish proteins (Bio CP), yeast extract, seaweed and all of this is added to molassed meals, some soya and micronized cereal, a fantastic bait. Quality and perceived quality are often miles apart.
Lets look at price against perceived quality.

One man in a shed may make a good quality bait, but at a price. His labour rate may be costing you more than £2 per kilo if he is fast and makes 50 kilos a day. Our machinery will make this amount within 15 minutes, so you can see where the savings are easily made, simply because our production is so much more efficient.

In simple terms our costs are much lower than many companies. That is why we can afford to use better ingredients and more of them in our baits.
